Scrunchies are regaining their popularity, which makes me happy because they’re such a fun accessory. It’s a great way to spice up a plain ponytail or bun, and it’s a perfect stash-buster for those tiny balls of yarn. I made this scrunchie with some leftover purple yarn and the finished result reminds me of a sea anemone. Try it out and add some ruffly flair to your hair!
Finished Size: Scrunchie measures approximately 4 1/2″ (11.5 cm) in diameter
Light Weight Yarn in 2 colors (approximately 30 yards of each)
Crochet Hook D (3.25 mm)
Ponytail holder approximately 2″ in diameter
12 dc = 2″
6 rows = 2″
Gauge Swatch: 2″w x 2″h (5 cm x 5 cm) ch 14
Row 1: dc in third ch from hook and in each ch across: 12 dc
Row 2 – 6: ch 2, turn, dc in each dc across: 12 dc
Note: Gauge is unimportant for this pattern; what matters is that the first round of stitches fills up the ponytail holder with a bit of ruffle. You can modify this pattern to work with bigger or smaller ponytail holders by adjusting the starting number of stitches. Just make sure it’s an even number.
